In this article, you will learn what standard fields and extended metadata are.
The most important fields are pre-activated in the Media Hub:
- Author
- Description
- Recording date
- Name (title)
- Copyright
If a media file contains information in these categories, they are imported automatically. For most purposes, these fields are sufficient. However, it can sometimes be useful to include more. To do this, activate the Extended metadata option in the settings under Metadata. All fields (tags) of the IPTC-IIM, Exif and XMP formats (see Glossary > Metadata formats) can now be selected, labelled and arranged as required using the Add metadata type button.
If extended metadata is activated, it is displayed in the media details (right sidebar), see Viewing metadata. You can find out how to edit metadata content here.
💡 Tip: The fields activated in standard mode are as follows, with Exif usually acting as a fallback:
| IPTC-IIM | Exif | |
| Author: | Byline | Artist |
| Description: | Caption | ImageDescription |
| Recording date: | CreatedDate | DateTimeOriginal |
| Name (title): | Title | N/A |
| Copyright: | CopyrightNotice | Copyright |
Due to the large number of possible applications, it is not possible to provide a reliable answer as to which data fields are also recommended. However, it should be mentioned that Exif is a technical data format in which most of the data is generated automatically. This includes, for example, the time the photo was taken, information about the camera used or GPS coordinates. IPTC-IIM is mainly used to store descriptive information. And with XMP, both technical and descriptive schemes can be mapped. We explain the differences between XMP and IPTC-IIM in detail in this blog post.
